MBB Prinzipfahrzeug
On May 6, 1971, Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm presented the Prinzipfahrzeug (principle vehicle): the world's first passenger-carrying maglev based on electromagnetic attraction.
The first maglev with passengers
In 1971 the Prinzipfahrzeug proved that people can travel levitating magnetically.
In 1971, MBB (Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm) presented the Prinzipfahrzeug, publicly for the first time on May 6, 1971. It was the world's first passenger-carrying maglev to levitate using the principle of electromagnetic attraction.
It was powered by an asynchronous short-stator linear motor, so the drive was located in the vehicle. The demonstration took place on a 660-meter test track in Ottobrunn near Munich, where the Prinzipfahrzeug reached up to 90 km/h.
Later, a vehicle ran on the same track at up to 225 km/h, but it was propelled by hot-water rockets and had wheeled running gear. In 1976 the track was dismantled and scrapped.
