History

The first Transrapid in Emsland

From 1989 to 1991, two Transrapids actually ran at the same time on the TVE.

The TR06 was the first vehicle on the Transrapid Test Facility Emsland (TVE) in northwestern Germany. The car body was built by Krauss-Maffei, and the levitation system came from MBB and Krauss-Maffei. In March 1983, the car bodies and levitation bogies arrived in Lathen from Munich.

The TVE was scheduled to open in September 1983. But at the first demonstration in July 1983, a short circuit in the stationary power supply caused a cable fire. The opening was postponed to early 1984.

In 1989 the TR07 replaced the TR06, yet the TR06 remained in service until 1991. This was possible because the TVE consists of two construction sections, each with its own drive blocks. However, the operations control systems of the two vehicles were not compatible, mainly because of the switch from the slotted waveguide to radio-based communication.
