The 600 km/h Maglev Research Center in Qingdao

As early as 2019, shortly after the public unveiling of the CRRC 600, it became known that a research center would be built in Qingdao.

As early as 2019, shortly after the public unveiling of the CRRC 600, it became known that a research center would be built in Qingdao.

Several pieces of information have now come together, making it clear that this research center houses not only the 5-section vehicle but also the recently unveiled switch along with a short test track. All information in this article is backed by Chinese sources.

According to statements to Chinese media, the center covers a total area of roughly 28,000 square meters, and construction began as early as October 2018.

It is certain that the 5-section CRRC 600 vehicle is stored in this research center. In January 2021 we reported on new details of the CRRC 600, but its exact location was unknown – until now.

The recently presented steel bending switch was also installed there, together with a short test track.

The commissioning of the research center also explains why the CRRC 600 middle section, which was delivered to the Tongji track and put into operation in January 2020, is no longer there.

However, a vehicle from CRRC Zhuzhou with a top speed of 200 km/h is still being tested on the Tongji track.

Summary

  • – 5-section vehicle completed
  • – Steel bending switch completed
  • – Production plant completed
  • – Maintenance hall completed
  • – Short test track completed

This once again shows how far along the CRRC 600 already is. It remains unclear, however, on which line the vehicle will reach 600 km/h.
