Transrapid 06: Lathen Lets Technology History Rot and Ignores Offers of Help
The Transrapid 06 (TR06) was the first vehicle to run on the Transrapid Test Facility Emsland (TVE) and reached a top speed of 412.6 km/h in operation. Today this very vehicle has stood unprotected for decades in a yard in Lathen - regularly daubed with new graffiti, visibly weathered and with no discernible care. The owner is the Samtgemeinde Lathen (the local municipal association). It is letting the vehicle decay.
The Bochum Railway Museum backed out
A solution seemed within reach for a time: the Eisenbahnmuseum Bochum (Bochum Railway Museum) had expressed interest in taking over the TR06 and even received a commitment from the Samtgemeinde. In the end, however, the museum chose a different vehicle and passed on the TR06. Since then, the fate of the Lathen section has been unresolved - and in the meantime the Samtgemeinde has neither developed a solution of its own nor taken any visible steps to stop the further decay.
Two letters, no reply
This is where the association Zukunft Fernverkehr e.V. (ZFV, "Future of Long-Distance Travel") comes in. On April 12, 2026, the association wrote to the Samtgemeinde Lathen and expressly offered to discuss possible future uses of the vehicle. The letter went without any response. A formal reminder to Mayor Helmut Wilkens followed on May 19, 2026 - it, too, remains unanswered to this day.
David Harder, deputy chairman of Zukunft Fernverkehr e.V., sums up the situation plainly:
"We politely offered to help twice - because this vehicle and its history matter to us. The Samtgemeinde did not even reply. Anyone who would rather let a vehicle of this historical rank rot than talk to a dedicated association owes the public an explanation."
The vision: restoration instead of decay
The association's goal is concrete. ZFV can imagine taking over the TR06 from the Samtgemeinde, having it professionally restored and operating it permanently as an exhibit - not as a static object, but as a living monument to Transrapid technology that is open to the public.
What makes the TR06 special is its interior. Unlike many other surviving vehicles of this era, it is still largely preserved in its original condition inside. Anyone who steps aboard experiences directly what stood behind the Transrapid: a clear technical vision and German engineering at a high level. A restored TR06 would thus be more than an exhibit - it would be tangible evidence that Germany had this technology, mastered it and could have used it.
The association intends to finance the project through a combination of crowdfunding, personal donations from board members and applications for public funding. The willingness to take this path is there - but it hinges on whether the Samtgemeinde Lathen is willing to respond at all.
Call for a statement
Zukunft Fernverkehr e.V. calls on the Samtgemeinde Lathen and Mayor Helmut Wilkens to issue a statement and enter into a constructive dialogue on the future of the TR06. The finding is unambiguous: the vehicle's condition is getting worse by the day.
This is not a peripheral museum detail but about how a vehicle regarded worldwide as a symbol of German engineering achievement is treated. A public owner that lets such a cultural asset decay while refusing to answer every offer of a solution bears responsibility - toward history and toward the public.
