It recently emerged that CRRC Changchun is developing a new type of maglev train based on the technology of Japan’s L0 Shinkansen. It is clear that the technology is identical to that of the Japanese L0 Shinkansen.

Unlike all other countries, China pursues a very broadly based maglev development program that covers practically every speed range. The new vehicle, still without an official name, adds to this product family.

Test track already in place

It also emerged that a short test track has been built for the system. However, there is not yet a finished vehicle operating on it.

How the vehicle differs from Japan’s L0 Shinkansen is not known. It was only mentioned that this technology is being developed for speeds above 600 km/h. The CRRC CF600 (based on German Transrapid technology) covers the speed range of 300 – 600 km/h, while its “little brother”, the red CRRC CF200, is intended for speeds of 200 – 250 km/h. Other technologies, developed in Changsha in particular for the low-speed sector, are unrelated to Transrapid or L0 Shinkansen technology, however.
