No Heritage Protection for the Transrapid Test Facility Emsland

In October 2022, the Lower Saxony State Office for Heritage Preservation told us in writing that the Transrapid Test Facility Emsland cannot be protected as an industrial monument.

An assessment of the test facility was carried out in 2015, but the examiner responsible found at the time that there is allegedly “no public interest in preservation”.

The reasoning given is that the facility’s existence was time-limited from the start. That means the dismantling of the facility was contractually fixed even before construction began.

For something to be protected as an industrial monument, it requires “historical, scientific, artistic or urban-planning significance as well as a public interest in preservation”, which is allegedly not currently given.

Personally, I see it differently. The Transrapid Test Facility Emsland is, in its form, a facility unique in the world that served for decades to test an internationally known, state-funded high technology. It is firmly anchored in the culture and history of the Emsland district and, owing to its uniqueness and the long Transrapid history in Germany, is still a magnet for technology enthusiasts from around the world. I say this from experience, as someone who interacted with visitors at the Transrapid visitor center every weekend for almost two years.

Complete dismantling of the line would mean the final removal of Transrapid technology from Germany. The Transrapid was developed and tested in Germany for decades, at times standing at the center of German politics. At its peak, the line attracted over 2,000 visitors a day, and many high-ranking international politicians and ministers visited it as well.
